Sustainability & Environment

As the health and safety of our employees is of utmost importance to us, we value the sustainability of the Cobar region and its environment equally. Peak Mine's is a corporate citizen and also a leader in the Cobar community as we nurture old relationships as well as forge new ones.

Community

Representatives of Peak Mines serve on the boards of Cobar Enterprise Facilitation, Cobar Water Board, the Emergency Management Committee, Cobar Pool Committee & Cobar Health Centre Committee. Peak Mine's believes in developing and maintaining relationships built on respect with the wider community. As part of this development, the company seeks to support a large range of local organizations by providing support in the form of monetary donations as well as in-kind support wherever possible. In 2007, the company donated more than $19,000 to various organizations and charities from the Cobar region.

Environment

Peak Mines realizes the importance of protecting our land and environment, which is why our company has broken down our focuses into three main areas: water, land, and air.

  1. Water
    • Peak has maintained a policy of water recycling for several years and was well placed during the water crisis (For more information on the water crisis, refer to 2007 Peak Mines Sustainability Report) period as a result of water efficiencies introduced to the mine site. In 2007, the company reduced the amount of raw water used from 37.4ML in 2006 to 17.8ML in 2007.
  2. Land
    • In a year of great activity for the Peak site the company has assumed responsibility for rehabilitating historic mine sites on its leases and has completed rehabilitation of some of these sites. In 2007, 17ha of disturbed land was rehabilitated.
  3. Air
    • Peak is committed to energy efficiency and reducing its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and ultimately climate change. Peak acknowledges its obligation to reduce energy consumption, which is why an Energy Savings Action Plan was implemented in 2006. Peak has prescribed noise and vibration limits as part of the Environmental Protection Authority License for the operations. In an effort to reduce dust Peak carries out dust monitoring on a quarterly basis. Dust levels have been measured and analyzed to show that our levels are below the dust limits.
